I think it was mostly the banana peel, and somebody falling over.

Why is it always a banana peel?

Betty needs to slip on a banana

She was loud, abrasive, intrusive, obnoxious, and did not contribute to the development of the plot.

Betty’s getting closer, in panel 2. It’s because a bully got her comeuppance at the best possible moment. And the guys laughing was as funny as the fall (remember, right before one guy was lamenting “I’ll never laugh again”.)

One of All time great movies. But if you don’t know the stars and their personas it loses a lot.

So, what movie was it?

I like Betty, but she’s getting to be such a buzz kill.

I’ve never slipped on a banana peel but I have slipped and fallen on a wet floor. Not very funny. Even less funny at my age now as I would have trouble getting up.

It was funny because Ethel Merman’s character in that film was totally obnoxious, and all the rest of the characters hated her guts. Plus, this is the only instance that I am aware of where the slipping on a banana peel gag was done in a live action movie, since it is normally used solely in animated cartoons.

Maybe it’s as funny as a guy getting hit in the crotch with some object.

Oh, it’s exactly because it happened to a strong, dominant woman in the context of that movie.

“Oh, and do these pants make my butt look fat?”

Give the poor guy a break.
