“Find another job, that pays at least as well and which you might actually enjoy. You have work experience. Lot’s of places are eager to hire anyone, and you have experience and a good work ethic. Oh, but don’t quit at Rod’s ’til you have the new one.”
Yesterday I said the following and was slammed: There’s a disconnect. He seems entitled. That’s not the usual work ethic of someone supplementing the family existence.
One can be ambitious and still have a good work ethic; however, in this case he’s bad-mouthing an opportunity. This job provides work experience, a stepping-stone to more opportunities. A successful person knows when it’s time to move on, then move on, but never burn your bridges nor forget those that helped you along the way.
Now he’s offering to pay for a meal? Why? Perhaps it will pan out to a joke. But if not, the offer shows a money mismanagement issue, and perhaps an egotistical one as well. In this scenario that is not generosity, it’s foolishness. Baldo is not needy, at least not financially.

There’s a Jamaican proverb:
The full belly says, “This ripe guava has worms in it.”
The empty belly says, “Let me see.”

I never had a fulfilling job. They paid me and I could pay my bills. That is how it is for most workers.

Him paying for Baldo’s food must really help to put grocery money into his families coffers!

Shouldn’t he be saving his money for his parents food budget? Let Baldo pay.
