I often used a clock radio in high school and college, but never really had any trouble getting up in plenty of time. In later years it was occasionally difficult to get up in time for work, especially with a long commute involved, but the consequences of being late to work were much milder than being late to school!

I tried waking up to the radio. Once. It was back in high school and I woke up about the time second period was starting.

I learned way too late that if you go to bed at the right time, you don’t need to be awakened. It just happens!
