Ah yes, listen to the tRumpublicans now whine and cry about the American Capitalist System of Supply and Demand. Now they are sounding just like those “entitled poor” they always rail about.
There is of course, the tRumpbulican solution to the problem, where the government increase the 38 Billion dollars in tax payer paid subsidies that go to the meat and diary industries now.
There is another solution, one that the tRumpbulicans would of course detest. Eat less beef and in reasonable proportions. We have become a nation that believes that we should eat all we can eat, instead of eating what we need to eat. We also are a nation that thinks nothing of creating waste, lots of waste. 30-40 percent of the food in this country goes to waste.
Try taking control of your meat buying. Instead of spending the extra money to upgrade from a 65" flat screen to a 72" flat screen, take that money and buy your a self big nice chest freezer. Then stock it with meat from a locker instead of buying you meats from the grocery store.
We do that every year. We paid $3.86 a pound for a whole processed grass fed Angus this last year cut to our specifications. That was $3.86 for hamburger as well as $3.86 for thick cutT-Bone steaks, roasts, prime rib etc. We also bought 1/2 a hog and a dozen whole chickens. We will eat good for the next year, when it will be time to stock up once more without going to the meat counter at the grocery store or the butcher shop. The only thing we will buy at the butcher or the fish mongers is a leg of lamb for Easter and fish.
The silver lining to high meat prices is that more and more people are looking at plant protein. Great for their bodies, great for the animals that aren’t killed, great for the environment! At Whole Foods yesterday there was a sign saying “Tofu packages are limited to two per person because of shortages”.
Doesn’t bother me a bit nor those who preceded me in making a dietary change for the better. Raised redneck instilled with the idea that tearing away on bones full of red meat was the macho healthy thing to do until I found out more.
Stopped all red meat four years ago when I learned more about the injected hormones and antibiotics and the dyes and chemicals used to display the package for marketing purposes only. Then there is the impact on the environment and waste of land use too.
Health improved and continues to get better over time. Doctor asks every year about what I am doing so that I am above average compared to my peers and require no prescriptions. In his semi-jovial words, “I can’t make any money off of you”.
I hope that the red meat quadruples in price so perhaps less will be consumed. Fast food aficionados should not mind since they already consume pounds of pink slime on white bread.
