i was a switchboard operator for Ohio Bell. i remember placing local and long distance calls for people calling from payphones; collecting the money, notifying them when their 3 minutes were up, and hoping they didn’t walk away when it was time to collect the additional money when they talked passed the 3 minutes. the nickel, dime, and quarter each had their own tone so we knew what each coin that was being deposited and IF it was being deposited. Oh the stories I could tell!
