I have come to learn that “block” isn’t a familiar term outside of North America and Australia.
So: A “block,” or “city block” is an informal unit of distance. Imagine a grid of streets: some go north-south, some go east-west. a block would be the distance between one north-south street to the next, one east-west street to the next, or the area inside a quadrilateral formed by two north-souths and two east-wests. If you’re at a stop sign on the corner of First and Main, and you need to get to a cafe on the corner of Fourth and Main, you would go three blocks.

You left out the part that you had to walk uphill -both ways - on your knees over broken glass.
