I’ve been active in left politics since 1967. I’ve been in many demonstrations, large and small, and I’ve been arrested several times. I’ve been in leadership positions, and as a leader I have always advocated non-violent action. I’ve always been comfortable working with pacifists, though I’m not sure I would call myself a strict pacifist. Very few people are strict pacifists; almost everyone thinks that some kind of violence is justified in some circumstances. I have spent hundreds of hours debating what actions are justified and what actions aren’t. These are complex questions, and a short post can’t begin to do them justice. Here’s one point: if there is a slave revolt, the violence is the fault of the masters, not the slaves. Another point: violence takes many forms, and not all of them are direct—violence can be built into a social structure. Here’s another: the ruling class (and there is a ruling class, though its membership is fluid) finds it very useful to pit different sections of the oppressed classes against each other. Racism has been particularly useful for this purpose. On a related topic, there are extreme groups on both sides. In the late sixties and early seventies, the extreme of the left (including, for instance, the Weatherpeople) was a serious danger (and I always argued against them). But for many years the extreme of the left has hardly existed and it’s no real threat. But the extreme of the right is very dangerous. Whatever justification the protest in Ottawa may have had (and I don’t think they had much justification at all), there is a real danger that the extremes are going to take it as a great success, following on the success of Jan 6th. They will learn from this how to organize better. They will raise a lot of money. And they will be back to cause even more trouble.

Nobody said “largely peaceful protestor”, they said “largely peaceful protest”. Everybody agreed that individuals looters and arsonists were not peaceful. You are making a comparison on something that never happened.

Those “truckers” are fake. They are blocking REAL truckers from making a living. Many truck drivers are independent contractors (which I think is BS so companies don’t have to pay fair wages or provide benefits) so the >10% of truckers that refuse to get vaccinated are hurting those that provide goods and services.

The majority of the violence and mayhem in BLM protests came from Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and opportunists that looted.

The street in front of Parliament Hill was the heart of the protests. It had been occupied by protesters and their trucks since late last month, turning into a carnival on weekends.

Canadian authorities also announced they had used emergency powers to seize 76 bank accounts connected to protesters, totalling roughly $3.2 million ($2.5 million US).

On Saturday, they also closed a bridge into the nation’s capital from Quebec to prevent a renewed influx of protesters.

By Friday evening, at least 100 people had been arrested, mostly on mischief charges, and nearly two dozen vehicles had been towed, including all of those blocking one of the city’s major streets, authorities said.

Ottawa residents complained of being harassed and intimidated by the truckers and obtained a court injunction to stop their incessant honking.

Canadians have largely embraced the country’s COVID-19 restrictions, with the vast majority vaccinated, including an estimated 90% of the nation’s truckers.
