A man in ancient Rome walks into a bar and the bar man asks him how many beers does he want. The man holds up his index and middle fingers and the barman gives him 5 beers;.

Yes but taken out of context…V was used as a U back then…

In the Roman alphabet there was neither a U nor a J. Possibly because it was difficult to carve small curves on letters. V was used for both U and V and I was used for both I and J. Julius Ceasar spelled his name IVLIVS on carvings. This is why the name John is spelled both Jan and Ian depending on what part of the former Roman Empire you are in.

“Archie, this is Mr. Clarence the fifth Marshall.”

    “That’s Clarence V. Marshall, ma’am.”

“Oh, I thought it was a Roman numeral.”

It used to annoy the heck out of me when the BBC used to put up the year a programme was made in Roman numerals, and then take down the captions before I could work it out. I’m sure someone at the BBC was doing it deliberately, just for the laugh.

Id and BC classics tend to get stuck at the first of a month for a week or so… stay tuned and back up a few days to get caught up when they resume.

I’m curious as to why it only happens when changing from one month to another. Do they actually fill a buffer at GoComics a month at a time, but then forget to update?
