If his potassium is low enough, he has zero appetite, is slowly declining, and heading for an ER visit. I had this happen, no one tested me, and I slogged through trying to remember to eat at least once in a while, felt dehydrated very badly but couldn’t figure out why drinking two gallons of water a day didn’t help. My brain was feeling dried out. Once I really got weak I went to the hospital, listing one symptom as “mental confusion.” I was asked what I thought was wrong, and I said I thought I was dehydrated. I would have been dead in about 24 hours. I had an infusion of potassium, was held for 23 hours for observation, and told to take huge amounts of potassium tablets for weeks. No one suggested lima beans. Then again, my situation was not funny! I lost 30 pounds in a few months, and I am not a big person to begin with. I then learned a little about electrolytes.
There was a “C” Rat in Viet Nam that everyone hated, well except for me. It was Ham and Lima Beans, although we called it something else that was even less appetizing. I would trade stuff for it, except for my Pound Cake.

Any old Salty Marines here ever eat “Ham & Mothers”? That was a C-ration meal of ham and lima beans.
