Everybody says they want someone who is not a party politician, but they never vote for them.

Well, you could always support eliminating private money from political campaigns and favor public funding, which could level the playing field for third party and independent candidates, but that’s just crazy talk.

The Electoral College is why we’re in this mess. It effectively allows for only 2 major parties to exist.

Both Democrats and Republicans are coalitions of smaller groups that have joined together to get 51%, which the electoral college makes a necessity. Heavily ideological parties don’t get large BECAUSE they’re heavily ideological.

And if the Republicans keep it up, they’re going to become a minor party, for precisely that reason.

The problem is, the third party candidates are no better. They tend to be even more extreme than the main parties. The libertarians seem to want an “every one for their self” society and just trust people to do the right thing.

I’ve voted for a third party candidate in more than one election – most recently in 2016. I did not vote for Trump because I thought his personality unsuited for the POTUS, and I did not vote for Hillary because, well because she is Hillary, with all the negative behaviors, attitudes, and attributes that are Hillary. I don’t see voting third party as ‘wasting’ my vote, I see it as expressing dissatisfaction with the major party candidates on offer.

Being Libertarian isn’t going to help.

The problem isn’t that there are no third party candidates, the problem is there are dozens or even hundreds, all with different axes to grind.

“What are your positions on the issues?” “2, 4, 6… basically the even ones. And 7.”
