Just like real life parties among adults. There’s always someone casting some attitude, real or imagined, that someone else is feeling and mostly misinterpreting to the point there is a snit, vocalized or not, that everyone else can feel but no one can do anything about. Then, when everybody leaves, they all go home talking about what a jerk each other was.
For the sake of the family, I can only hope that this is just a little make-believe game that he and Katie like to play. If he’s taking it seriously, he needs help.
In a gentler vein, when my daughter was 14 and had to have some teeth extracted, I brought her home, set her up to rest on the couch, and went upstairs to get one of her stuffed animals to keep her company. I was upstairs a little longer than planned. When I came down, I explained that the delay was due to the animals debating which one should be allowed to provide her comfort. She was obviously old enough not to buy it, but she appreciated my humor and playfulness.
