Sal was the duck!

Did not know Sal was an ESL guy.

What he actually meant by “duck dinner” is that he was going to whip a plate full of food at your head as hard as he could. If you wanted dinner, you would be obliged to duck.

So the other person was J. Wellington Wimpy? (Who, ear the end of Segar’s life, was taking over as the star of the strip. He had the whole anti-hero thing going for him. Had they made a live-action Popeye movie in the 30s, the perfect person to play Wimpy would’ve been W.C. Fields. Just replace alcohol with hamburgers — )

But wasn’t the “buy a duck” reference either radio star Joe Penner or maybe Groucho Marx? I don’t connect them with Wimpy.

I can’t see Wimpy be an employer. Sam must have meet him outside

Wimpy owes a lot of people money, notably Popeye, although I don’t ever remember him paying someone back with a duck dinner. Maybe Donald didn’t want to cooperate.

I think Sal has been ‘ducked’.

Shouldn’t that read “Where can I buy a duck?”

Where I can buy a duck? Is that part of the gag?
