Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a smart guy, but was he as smart as Sherlock Holmes? Probably not. There’s an art to writing characters who are supposed to be smarter than their writers, and Conan Doyle could do it. Many cannot; they just pull out the old thesaurus and have the person use the biggest words they can find.
