Fifty years ago I was awakened by a call in the middle of the night. I answered, and a male voice demanded, “Who is this?” I asked who he was calling, and he asked, “Is this ___-____?” His number was one digit off, but I was half awake, and didn’t catch it, so I said that was this number. He asked again, and I said, “That’s this number! What d’you want!”He yelled, “WHERE’S MY WIFE!” I said, “Oops!” and hung up.

Today’s strip reminds me of two different Laurel and Hardy films. The first was a silent called “We Faw Down” and the second was a talkie called “Blockheads” made about ten years later.

In “We Faw Down”, Stan and Ollie are chased by their wives who fire a shotgun at them and several men in their underwear dive out of windows and hurriedly get dressed. In “Blockheads”, a jealous husband (played by Billy Gilbert) chased Stan and Ollie and fired his new elephant gun at them. Several men jumped out of bedroom windows.

Billy Gilbert had previously played the owner of “The Music Box” in the Oscar-winning Laurel and Hardy short of that name and played other roles in Laurel and Hardy comedies. He also voiced Sneezy in “Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs” and supported Charlie Chaplin in “The Great Dictator”.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, loved practical jokes. As a joke, he once sent a telegram to each of 12 friends. All were men of great virtue and respected in society. The telegram simply read, “Flee! All has been discovered.” Within 24 hours, the story goes, all 12 had left the country.
