I’ve been called “Bear” since HS. While living in New England, the only other nicknames I heard were “Skip” “Cap’n” “DJ” and “PT”. In contrast, when I moved to Texas, it seemed like nearly everyone had a nickname.
In my early 20s, I worked at a bar where customers and sometimes even the employees had nicknames. It could get confusing! Once a vendor came in and asked for a guy with a name I’d never heard of, who turned out to be the head bartender, who always used a different name! I felt pretty dumb, because I had told the guy nobody with that name worked there!

I watch old re-runs of Gunsmoke. Festus has cousins with names like this – some ever better.

When you know three Bobs, six Mikes and a couple of Ricks – nicknames are the only way to go. :)
