Back in the early ’60s, a friend of mine bought an old abandoned Congregational church in Vermont and turned it into a bar, much to the horror of some of the old Yankee bluenoses.
In some rural areas it’s not uncommon to see a church sharing a parking lot with the tavern next door. Driving by on Sunday mornings you never could be sure where the folks were congregating.
At the “He Ain’t Here” bar, the phone was at the end of the bar past the mirror and on the wall. Answering was truthful when the bartenders says “I don’t see him”.

Usually it happens AFTER the couple says the “I do’s”, when they realize what they’ve done.

There used to be an Altar Bar here, in an old church. It has since been reconverted to its original use.
