I was lucky. My wife learned her social behaviors from her father. I was also fortunate that I got to know him for nine years before he died.
If I had met my wife after her father had died and conjectured what my wife’s changes with age would be by how her mother interacted, then I would have assumed that the future would be intolerable and told my wife-to-be that “it’s not you it’s me”.
I should have told my father-in-law how much I appreciated and respected him when he got the terminal diagnosis. Too young to realize how important and meaningful it would be to a guy who went through a depression, a war, a tax audit caused by a crooked accountant (took three years and legal fees to clear his name), a divorce of a first wife, etc.
