To tell the barber he doesn’t want him to talk would embarrass him. Most people will sense when you don;t respond to their chatter that you’re not interested in talking.
Sort of like when I’m forced to listen to annoying music at work. I don’t want to hear it, but I don’t want to be that guy who made them turn it off.
How about “If you don’t mind, I’d like to just sit quietly and read my comic book while you cut my hair. Thanks.” and that’s it. Maybe he can talk to your father instead.
Just put up with it Dean. Getting older means being put in annoying situations that you can’t get out of and learning to be bored. It doesn’t build character, it doesn’t make you a better person for doing it – it’s just part of life.
I disagree. Annoying situations are where you learn to shut up & listen. And learn tolerance & patience with others. As well as, if you actually listen to what’s being said, you may just learn something!
To the posters above: if the older guy was telling stories about serving in Europe during the Cold War or something like that I’d agree… but that’s not the problem. He’s also asking questions of a personal nature that are putting Dean on the spot. Kids at that age can be really shy about certain topics even with their friends, let alone with distant acquaintances. The problem Dean has is keeping this older guy in his lane, and he seems to be struggling with how to do that without coming across as disrespectful.
