I sometimes get calls at work that make wonder if I am actually being tested. Some kind of psychological test to see if I can respond without sarcasm to ridiculous questions.
I work for an answering service & get that question a lot. The problem is, all I know is that nobody at the place they called could get to the phone at the time of the call, but not why. Venturing any sort of guess as to whether or not the company is open or when the caller might get a call back only comes back to bite us.
I remember in the Army a Sgt answered the phone late one night. âHeaven here. God speaking. Christ ainât here can I take a message?â Suddenly his eyes went wide open, he dropped the phone, and ran down the hall leaving me in the duty office. I picked up the receiver and answered using correct military jargo. The angry voice saidâŠThis is Colonel BradburyâŠwho the hell was that? I responded with the Sgtâs name. Where the hell is he? I responded The last I saw him he was running down the hallway in a panic. The Colonel saidâŠThe him Christ is coming for him. I said Yes sirâŠif I see him again. The Colonel showed up with two MPsâŠwe found the Sgt standing on a toilet in the bathroom. I spent the rest of the detail alone. Smiling the whole timeâŠthat Sgt was a real jerk.
My sister gave the best answer to a customer when they asked her if she was a cashier. Now mind you, her name and the words, Head Cashier, where clearly written on her apron, and she standing behind a register! She answered, âNo, I found this apron when I walked in here and decided to stand here for fun!â
âThank you for calling. Our hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days a week. If you want to talk to a human, I will transfer you now. Otherwise hang up.â Click

The alternative to asking that question is hanging up when a human answers
