[Nerd alert] Jim Bouton, a pitcher, wrote a crime novel about an umpire who is bribed to throw a play-off game. He figured that a sports/crime novel would be a big success. It got good reviews, but the big publicity push was swallowed up by a bigger sports/crime story. The OJ Simpson murders.
If you can find it, âSqueeze Play, by Bouton and Eliot Asinof
I remember, just before graduating from seminary, starting to coach a coed soccer team of U12âs. I was giving them instructions at one of my practices, when a little girl, one of the best players, asked, âAre you a preacher?â Since Iâd not told them all my background, I was curious how she drew that conclusion. When queried, she replied, âBecause you like to tell stories.â

The ones by the little ones are best. Because they have big ears, they overhear all sorts of juicy gossip that most people miss.
