There is a street in Globe, Az (or there was one 50 years ago when last I was there) that is four lanes wide has a significant slope to it and a 25 mph speed limit. That is a speed trap, pure and simple.
Reminds me of a gambit when I was a kid. We were traveling through the rural precincts of a mid-Western state (may have been Missouri) and my Dad was pulled over for speeding (he was a rather fast driver, he probably was running over the limit). The cop offered him the option of going to the JP immediately or returning for a bench trial a few weeks hence, he chose the former. We followed the cop through the hinterlands for 15 or 20 minutes and hauled up at a farmhouse. The cop ushered us into the house. We were seated in the parlor in front of desk, and then the JP’s wife went to fetch her husband. Perhaps 5 or 10 minutes later the JP entered, fresh from his hog pen and dressed in bibs and mucky boots. Without changing his attire he opened court, listened to the cop, accepted Dad’s guilty plea and fined him $25 payable in cash. That was a significant — not to say punitive — fine, given the ca. 1960 time frame.
This is reminiscent of an episode of the the TV show ‘Make Room For Daddy’ in which Danny Thomas’ character is stopped in a small town for a traffic violation by the sheriff who also happened to be the justice of the peace. The man who played that role was a relatively unknown comedian at the time. The episode received so much response from viewers that Danny Thomas and his producer Sheldon Leonard decided to give the comedian his own self-titled show, ergo, ‘The Andy Griffith Show’.
Ironically, Andy’s main claim to fame prior to becoming the lovable Sheriff Andy Taylor was as the despicable central character Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes in the movie ‘A Face In The Crowd’.
Although it’s a more updated car for its time than the kind they drove in the Bud Fisher years, it’s still a classic cartoon car- a two seater with no roof, and no apparent leg room. And what keeps Jeff’s hat from flying off? Mutt at least holds onto his.
