When traveling overseas, I always choose to use their airline, not the US airline. Especially to Europe — it’s a whole different experience. What, say, US airlines provided into the 1970s.
If there is an emergency, I think a tip jar is permissible. Or he could be a gentleman and let others go first, picking their pockets as they pass in a panic.
