Learned of her passing from a guitarist (Gwenifer Raymond) playing at WOMAD. Everyone sitting and lying under the stars that night did a collective, awe.
Star Trek was so important to me. The basic premise was that the people on Earth not only learned to get along with each other, but sought others to form an alliance too.
Granted the women wore short skirts (Gene was a womanizer) and Uhura basically answered the phone, but it was a start. Uhura’s backstory on the new series is fantastic.
I remember hearing her tell the story about wanting to leave the show but MLK stopped her. Over the yesrs, she met so many little girls who were so grateful for “the black lady who ain’t no maid” as Whoppee Goldberg put it. They grew up to be successful in many fields, most notably astronaut Mae Jamesonwho appeared on Next Gen.
