27 chapters (as of yesterday) is a joke. “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” has 37 chapters. Some kid reading that one book this summer beat him? The contest started as 1/2 mile == 1 chapter but even 54 chapters for a real tie would be trivial for Caufield.
Caulfield evidently reads a lot anyway, so the contest has not necessarily changed his habit. But Mrs Olsen probably has just begun to get the benefits of the walking. I would say she wins on that count.
Sweet! Some of my favorite teachers a half-century ago had to pretend to be stern for practical reasons, but never quite succeeded in hiding their fundamental niceness.
