Mom always bought sunflower seed bird feed.

Eat up indeed….before the squirrels show up….

My father carried on a friendly war with squirrels raiding our bird feeders. The number of “creative” ways those critters came up with! I almost believed there was a Squirrel Research Center. Any day I expected them to parachute down from little squirrel aircraft.

Only feed the birds in late winter and early spring when food is hard to find .

Had to put out bait stations for the rats. The box says they are squirrel-proof…

I leave some feed made for squirrels for my little furry buddies. I enjoy watching them as much as the birds.

Unless one lives among bears and coyotes….

getting wild animals to depend on humans for food has always seemed like a bad idea to me (except in case of emergency)

The year waxes on to where it is about time to begin feeding the birds.

Fair payment for the musical show. :)

I keep two feeders filled with black oil sunflower seeds. I think the local squirrels get about half of the birdseed. That doesn’t bother me. The squirrels are fun to watch anytime. I even had four young fox kits climbing the tree to access one of the feeders. Among the resident bird population, we have four pairs of cardinals and two pairs of bluejays.

So do nature nerds.
