The mystery thickens, but I like this as it’s intresting: While it’s obviously shady as heck with the buy in, betting pools, and clearly rigged structure, the question is who set it up, how are they rigging it and can our heroes bust it wide open? Also not sure most kids would be that concerned about gambling. I didn’t gamble as a kid but I had no idea betting was technically lllegal at that age or soon after it. Like I get being concenred there’s a whole betting RING, that’s not normal, but it feels weird.
I got out of sports cards when it became clear that only certain people were allowed to get the rare and expensive cards.
I barely started on the M:TG path when it became clear those same kinds of people were horning in on the market, and it was no longer just a fun game anymore but a veritable business of trying to make sure you got all the rare cards before anyone else. Still sometimes play for fun, but I can’t take the game seriously at all since that time.

“I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here.”
