A couple of decades ago I can remember taking my youngest son and a girl that he knew from his school across town to some event. They were both about 14, I think. While we were traveling in the car, I was listening to a cd with some ‘oldies’ music that I liked from the early 1960s. Ricky Nelson was just finishing up “Travelin’ Man” when she asked me why we were listen to country music. Kids!
Back in our motocross days a buddy of mine was quite good, #1 in the region in several, class’. As a result our pit got a lot of attention from lookers on and what, in the idiom of the day, were know as pit bimbo’s (apologies for the now inappropriate term). The beautiful young women who seem drawn to testosterone driven guys on motor vehicles. One trio asked, as I was alone in our area (buddies were in the van) where G… was and why so many bikes. I explained that we had a friend, Steele Davies, with us that weekend. “Oh, Steele Dan is here?” Without missing a beat I said, “yes, but keep it quiet, he’s here to relax. He might, if no one makes a scene, bring our his guitar later, if you’d like to hang around”. Of course my buddies heard all of this and played along. It was about two hours before they realized Steele Dan was a band, not a person… They didn’t even get mad.
My dad and I definitely had overlap in our musical tastes. He was heavy into Swing and Classical, which I also liked. And he liked some of my Rock, in particular the groups Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, and believe it or not, Black Sabbath! He specifically liked “War Pigs” by Sabbath, although he thought some of the lyrics were a bit “over the line”…
My son got me listening to Rammstein. My wife bought tickets to their concert in Denver for my son, my son-in-law and me for a boy’s night out. I missed the concert but my son-in-law called to see if the show was family friendly so my grandson (8 or 9) could go in my place. “Sure, it’s family friendly!” Yeah, right. If it’s a really dysfunctional family! Eagles – Hotel California one of my favorites.
That song rocks! Katy is just being her miserable narcissistic self. Here’s a live version, although the sound is not up to par and cuts off a bit early: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYEOJbWwSZ8
Back in the 70s early 80s, Great Adventure in NJ used to have oldies acts on the weekends. We used to have a season pass just to go for the concerts, with the park as a bonus. One weekend it was Jay and the Americans. Sitting behind us were a bunch of twenty something who where not enjoying themselves. Then Jay starts CaraMia. Up they stand, out they walk.

Too bad, Katy. Leave your dad alone if you don’t like it.

I’m afraid I agree with Katy. I thought it was dad music when it was new.

Our music from the 60’s and 70’s was the best! Today’s music can’t even begin to compare!

Little does she know that she will ‘re-discover’ it about mid-life and it will make her nostalgic ‘for a simpler time’.

When I told a teenager that the only things on my iPod were CCR, the Kingston Trio and the New Christy Minstrels, she asked me what those were…

I’ve heard it said that if you remove the singing from Steely Dan’s music you will have smooth jazz. Guess that’s why I like smooth jazz.

Steely Dan is still at the top of my playlist. Possibly the best jazz/rock fusion that ever existed to date.

The guitar work in Steely Dan songs still amazes me! And yes, I know the two principals weren’t playing the lead guitar parts.
On the other hand, in newer music, listen to some of the guitar on Dada’s songs. WOW!

Of course, this involves listening/research. I was picking out the chords in “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number” and it hit me how old it was:
“What’s a letter?” “Why not just program the number into your phone?”
