i’m with you Petunia… I’ve been coaching high school sports for over 30 years…i pride myself on never yelling at the student athletes..and always remind them that i may talk loud..but don’t yell….one day many years ago i was heading to my office attached to the locker room and i thought i heard that word….i went into the locker to see what was going on and i found two really large players pushing a person of color into a storage closet and calling him ‘that’ name…. for the first and only time in my high school career i did yell… i got in between the two huge, young neanderthals and loudly explained that if they wanted to pick on someone they should try picking on me… that the use of that word is never acceptable…EVER.. uttered in hate…or a lyrics of a song…it is UN-ACCEPTABLE…. later that day the dad of the student who was being bullied called me and later stopped by to thank me…. i still get a text from the student every new years eve at midnight….he still remembers…and so do i….

I love the Medusa look mom Petunia got when she heard that. I wouldn’t want to be that coach for the other team. Or the foul-mouthed child.

There is never a good reason to use derogatory language towards any other individual. If used in ignorance the user needs education, if condoned the person who says nothing or implicitly or explicitly supports the derogatory language needs to be educated. I grew up in a white rural community, with few minorities other than the First Nations community living on the nearby reserve. Using derogatory language was never acceptable, and other than one incident when i was about 4 when i asked a minority friend of my older brother why their skin was a different colour, I have not been racist and have seldom encountered people who used race as measure by which to judge an individual. I can’t remember how the friend explained the difference to me, but after the conversation I knew that skin colour was not a valid way to look at or judge an individual.

Brigham Young University conducted a pretty significant investigation and determined that there’s no evidence to officially back up the allegations.

In essence, even with all of the potential witnesses and even camera recordings, it still comes down to “He said, she said”.

    Official statement on the investigation:
