Beauty and the Beast was written to get young girls accustomed to the idea of arranged marriages. Sure, the middle-aged man you just met and are now marrying may seem scary, but underneath he’s a good person.
At least in the Disney version, the Beast experiences emotional growth.
I mean, the castle’s been under the enchantment for 10 years (as stated in “Be Our Guest”), and the spell has to be broken by Beast’s 21st birthday; that means the prince was 11 when he was transformed. He wasn’t a cruel Lord, he was just a rotten kid.
