On our street the normal house lights are so bright and glaring that seasonal lights wouldn’t get a show. Lived for years at the end of a half-mile road with nearest neighbor at the entry. Not a light to be seen. Slept great. Now surrounded by houses 50’ apart and its almost like daylight from sunset to dawn. Sleep comes hard some nights just from the glare on the drapes.
And Frazz is correct. This weekend some houses might see some ‘extemporaneous’ changes in their structure and some streets might not be passable due to hurricane. Just pray no lives are lost or badly damaged.
I don’t obsess, but it’s a good year when the leaves (mostly) finish falling long enough (and in warm enough weather) before we get a hard rain so that I can clean the gutters without getting my fingers so cold they ache. That’s also a RARE year… but it has happened!
Where I grew up every winter season I could make my parents happy and make a few bucks from the neighbors with shoveling the snow (and with it building a grand snow fort in the front yard). Chances for that became increasingly rare for the kids around during the last 30 years. My fathers snow blower sits unused as the last 3 years there was not one day where if any snow fell it was already melting away before the 2-stroke engine could be persuaded to start.
I just want to throw out to the universe my thanks to the kids next door to my folks a few years back: there was a big snowstorm and Dad shoveled the driveway. That night Dad ended up in the hospital with serious chest pains. Apparently the neighbors saw or heard the ambulance in the middle of the night and after that, their kids, who were in their early teens, snuck over and shoveled out my folks’ driveway every time while trying not to get caught. They were, though, and the folks tried to pay them. They refused. It felt too good to just do it because they could and because clearly they were needed, and they weren’t going to risk letting Dad do it again. Lovely, lovely family, much appreciated. My folks retired and moved away not long after.
