For those that want to “connect with friends in a deeper and much more profound way”, I have a suggestion. Talk to them more than once a year. If you send cards, give gifts, and maybe call someone at Christmas, but completely ignore them the rest of the year, then you’re not really their friend.
I used to exchange Christmas cards regularly. And then when the pandemic hit, many people stopped sending them. I sent out cards for a year or two, but then we moved and I lost touch with many. I’m at the point in my life where I don’t see people as much because my kids are older. So I don’t send them out anymore.
The only thing that I do miss is the connection that I make in my mind when I send and receive cards. I actually do think of the ones that I send to, thinking about the times we had together and wondering what they’re up to now. And when I receive cards, I like seeing the photos they send (if any) and I also think about them and the times we had together. I disagree that we are not still friends if I’m only in contact once a year. People are busy and have lots going on, and no one can maintain contact so often. I’ve tried to get together with people, and it never works out with schedules and such. But if I see them randomly, it’s like no time has passed and we are happy to see each other and talk for a while. I still consider us friends.
Hello Cathy friends! Happy Friday! Have a great day, all!
I always took the time to make kindly philosophical notes and affectionate remembrances rather than writing a newsletter. You might think it does not make any difference but I recently found that Mom had kept every one.
I too remember the shared times when I receive a card from someone I don’t talk to often (which is just about everyone we from whom we receive cards). However, as I have discovered in life, it is possible to reconnect with someone you have not seen in decades and share even more memories. I had that happen last week. I guy I was friends with way back in college (that is over 50 years ago) and have seen only once since contacted me by phone last weekend. We had a great time catching up and plan to get together in person next summer. I call that a great Christmas gift.

I did it! I sent my (very few) Christmas cards, with notes, about ten days ago.
That was the first time in years I got them off early, and many years, people just got apologies for my not sending a card at all.
I do love Christmas cards, both sending and receiving, but somehow, my sending cards just doesn’t happen some years.
