Since Santa inherited that old coalmine, he has had to do things differently.

“I just give them each one lump. I want to send them a message – I want them to know that I am still thinking about them and that I care. Filling it full would be vindictive.”

The whole coal tradition (or the rods for beating) may have pre-Christian roots in the easter parts of Europe that were adapted to St. Nicholas because the traditions were too deeply rooted to get rid of. I do wonder how many cultures have some version of an extra-human spy checks on children’s behavior and punishes bad.

Receiving coal would be great for many people who are enduring a cold winter.

Well, I think those in Western Europe are going to be very bad so they will get a pile of coal…

Instead of coal, why doesn’t Santa just leave reindeer dung?

Hey Donner, it’s not about being vindictive, it’s called closing the feedback loop.
