The whole coal tradition (or the rods for beating) may have pre-Christian roots in the easter parts of Europe that were adapted to St. Nicholas because the traditions were too deeply rooted to get rid of. I do wonder how many cultures have some version of an extra-human spy checks on children’s behavior and punishes bad.
