Circa 1939, I think, the recap narration at the beginning of movie serial chapters from Columbia Pictures routinely claimed that the cliffhanger faced by the hero in previous chapter had been inescapable, “dooming him to certain death” — even though in the next second we saw that the hero actually did escape (or, more often, merely survived what should have killed him).
