I think almost everyone has either done this or lived with someone that did. Although the usual cleaner of choice is dishwash-ING soap instead of dishwash-ER detergent. But that would’ve been harder to convey in a comic strip.
Someone I know used regular liquid dish soap in their HE dishwasher because they were out. He said he figured dish soap was dish soap and told me there was foam everywhere when he came back from the store.
His hypothesis (soap is soap, all soaps are equal) seemed sound on paper, but actual field experimentation pointed out its deep flaws and foundational stupidity. Luckily, the kitchen floor needed scrubbing. Hop to it, Brad!
Once upon a time, I tried to help my Sadie when she was poorly. I filled the wee cup on the dishwasher door with dish soap.
IT’S @#$%ing DISH SOAP! AND I WAS WASHING @#$%ing DISHES! IN A @#$%ing DISHWASHER!
It’s not like I was using 10W-30 on a garden salad!
’Went out to mow the lawn, and when I returned, the kitchen looked a lovely winterscape . . .
So I cleaned it up and when Sadie arose, she was impressed that I’d washed the dishes AND the floor.

Similarly, we bought a range with a ceramic top. Big bold letters said we must not use our old pots and pans, and they recommended Circulon™ – so we bought a bunch.
Fast forward
After a couple of uses, we noticed one of the sauce pans was leaking around the rivets that fasten the handle to the pan. We sent it back to Circulon™ folks. They responded with a form letter telling us that there’s every indication these pans were washed in a dishwasher, which is in violation of the terms and conditions of their warranty as outlined on page 138 of the operations manual. (Do these guys read all the Microsoft Ts and Cs before they click “OK”?)
OK, then. Why does our dishwasher have a pots and pans cycle?
Live and learn Brad, hopefully you’ll have it figured out before you have your own family. Then you can tell these funny stories as precautionary tales and your kids can roll their eye at you.

Most shampoo’s nowadays have warning about dishwasher and laundry washing machines. Although I have used Dawn in the washer, just not too much of it.

Are we really supposed to believe that Brad ran a dishwasher on his own?

You gotta give him credit for trying, at least.
