Technically, all Hass avocados are descendants of the same tree. In fact, all trees are, but that’s just me being pedantic. Of course, the interesting thing about Hass avocados is that almost all trees are the direct offspring of the pictured tree, which was alive until 2002.

The thing about the meteor strike actually has some potentially-major practical significant, since most meteor defense strategies involve very small diversions. Most plans are to knock the meteor off course enough to miss us entirely, but hitting the ocean could possibly be a next best thing.

Also, because I have to keep being pedantic to survive, dinosaurs did survive. In fact, most people see or hear at least a few each day.

There would still have been devastating tsunamis around the globe, which would also have affected dinos living near the inland seas back then, such as in North America.

Some scientists believe that large volcano eruptions, such as in India, also contributed to the Dino extinction. That was certainly the case with the prior, more deadly Permian extinction around 250 mya.

Hi, Folks. With the Super Bowl being played soon I thought a football joke might be cool. Here goes:

A football coach walked into the locker room before a big game, looked over to his star player and said, “I’m not supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we need you in there. The school board says I have to do is ask you a math question, and if you get it right, you can play.” The player agreed, and the coach looked into his eyes intently and asked, “Okay, now concentrate… what is two plus two?” The player thought for a moment and then he answered, “4?” “Did you say 4?!?” the coach exclaimed, excited that he got it right. At that, all the other players on the team began screaming, “Come on coach, give him another chance!”

If you go back far enough in ancestry, you will find that every living species comes from a single specimen.

Forget the caves Jason. A meteor strike would collapse the cave.

And isn’t there one tree from which the Maraschino cherries were picked which are the mother of all fruitcakes?

THE best book on evolution I’ve ever read is “The Big Bang Exploded”. It’s available from Hartland Publications!

So if that’s the “mother tree”, does that mean an alligator is the “father”?

Because navel oranges have no seeds, they are propagated by grafting cuttings onto other trees. All the navel orange trees are essentially clones of the original. I never saw it, but the University of California Riverside had one grown from a cutting taken from the original tree. They called it the “Parent Navel Orange Tree.”

I saw several videos about the asteroid impact that caused the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. One said the asteroid hit in one of the worst places it could have. It hit where there was a lot of sulfur in the rocks. The sudden introduction of all that sulfur into the atmosphere made the impact made global cooling much worse.

Some animals still have that 3rd eyelid. It’s called a nictitating membrane, if you care to Google it.

I can’t quote the source but many years I read an article that claimed a huge asteroid landing in the ocean would be more detrimental to life than one hitting a land mass. Something about boiling all that water.

I love having the discussions about dinos and extinction events today, especially in light of our own recent massive comic extinction event. And here’s to our survivors!
