Near what?

The end is nearer for some than for others. You won’t know exactly when your time will come. Are you ready? Do you know where you’re going? [Do you know that the end doesn’t have to be the end?]

Is he waiting for The Rupture?

You often see signs “the end is near” but never that it is “here”.
