That is exactly why I never use the da*n ngs. I am not an employee, and my days of scanning sh*t went away after I got my Bachelor’s Degree. I want to keep people employed.
I used the self checkout a few times when it first came in the store where I usually shop. It did work a few times, but it seemed that there was some kind of problem most times I used it. It usually ended up saying “please wait for assistance”. I thought maybe it was just the ones in that store that didn’t work properly, and I tried in a few other stores, but with the same result. Now I never use those things.
Yup, I prefer human interaction. Most of the time they are nice. Sometimes you get a worker that is bad, but not often. The only one’s that really irritate me are the ones that can’t add; hard to believe there are that many dumb people.
I’ve not had many problems of my own making using the scanners. Normally any issues are related to the scanner itself not working or the item being scanned isn’t the computer. Sometimes there is more than one barcode.
often in fact even with a cashier, the code wouldn’t scan and they would call a helper to check another item or get the price or or or – it’s like a frequent thing for me – I guess people memorized my face by now and they wouldn’t stop behind me in the queue line shrug
I was forced to use one and it took 3 associates and 30 minutes to get me out the store. I hate these things. I go to places that don’t have them if I can.
I’ve always resented the shopper in line in front of me, you know, the one who wants to write a check and doesn’t even start until the cashier is finished. I like self-checkout!
I find self check very convenient. When I have a couple of things I can get out of the store quickly. I don’t have a problem with scanning barcodes except when the barcode labels are missing, creased, or smeared. That seems to happen a lot at the hardware store. Then I lose the time saved completely.
The T**get store two blocks from home has self check out, and two stations for customer service. None of the self check outs take cash and the one that does, requires exact change. The customer service stations will use credit or check, but no cash. I had been using checks, UNTIL, the Manager who closes the store out would steal the checks (they insisted they had to keep the checks) from the till after they were electronically scanned and taken from my checking account, and at a future time would take cash from the drawer, and send the check through again as a new purchase. I REFUSE TO SHOP AT T**GET anymore. They are a crooked company. I’d rather walk 2 miles to Walm*** and shop there.
If I am going to do the work I want to get paid. I used to live in a biggish city and when in the Safeway I would always pay myself with a few steaks or some such thing when I used the self-checkout. Now I live in a small town with a grocer, bakery, butcher shop, fame’s market when in season and I love it. Willing to pay for fewer processors between me and my food.

I’m technologically inept and I have had few problems
I did have some problems when I started using them but I’ve learned, I’m merely inept and not completely helpless with tech

I love the convenience of self checkout! I think someday ordinary checkouts will be like full service gas stations used to be.

It’s all in the way you bring it across the scanning plate, it’s kind of a twist motion.

All stores seem to be going in that direction. I hate it. I miss interacting with the cashier.
