Minnesota State Senator opposes state legislation to provide free breakfast and lunches to all students in Minnesota.

“I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that is hungry,” Sen. Steve Drazkowski said in remarks on the floor of the State Capitol in St. Paul before voting on the legislation. "I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that says they don’t have access to enough food to eat.”

“Now, I should say that hunger is a relative term,” added Drazkowski, 58. “I had a cereal bar for breakfast. I guess I’m hungry now.”

I don’t recall it ever being an issue when I was young, over 1/2 a century ago. Things have really changed, that we should even have to have this discussion.

Some years I got an allowance that was just enough to cover lunch money. “You want more, do more.” If they started stealing lunch money, I started taking sandwiches.

I like making sure all the kids get fed. Free for all takes the stigma out & eases that burden on all parents.

In Maine, breakfast, lunch, and after-school snacks are provided for all the children, not just the impoverished. I at first thought it a “bit overboard”, but there really are a lot of kids in our school systems that are hungry. My parents always had fed us (five kids) well even on a tight budget. Poor economic times, drugs and other addictions, divorces, ignorance all that can add to the hunger some kids have. Many parents just don’t have the money these days.
