There was a discussion about children’s imaginations “these days” in toay’s Breaking Cat News. Children have different experiences upon which to build their Imaginations. Gabby asked a valid question. She deserves an answer.
My father said his job as a child was to grind the coffee beans. He also said his job was to stir the oatmeal every morning. I know that he would gather the coal that fell off the coal truck and along the train tracks. He ran home from school so that boys wouldn’t beat him up for being Polish. The iceman would sometimes give them bits of ice in the summer and sometimes they would take pieces of ice from the truck while the man was inside making deliveries. All of this and much more was not part of my world just a few years later. For my children (now middle aged) it may as well be Shakespearean.

When kids stop working up their imagination, the hungrier parts of the world start salivating. We have sown the seeds of our own destruction.

Apparently overusing your GPS is bad for your brain. Glad I still rely on paper maps for distant places and the map in my brain for hereabouts.
