As someone who watched tons of PBS as a little kid in the 2000s, they really didn’t do fundraising stuff that often. Just very occasionally. I don’t think that’s really changed since then, has it?
When PBS does “fundraising” I wonder what the most of the funds are for. How come there’s never an explanation from the broadcasters about the percentages of where this money is going.
My parents always said they would donate to PBS if they wouldn’t come on and ‘beg’ as they put it. Then one year, PBS said, no pledge drive this season, we won’t interrupt shows, just invite you to send in a donation, and you won’t hear from us again. I asked my folks, so, no begging this time, are you going to write them a check. They said no, not a chance. I have money sent automatically each month – making up for my mom and dad, perhaps.

Whoa, making a joke about PBS fundraisers! Batiuk doesn’t care whose toes he steps on!
P.S.: “The Simpsons” did it in 2000, and Mad Magazine about 20 years before that.

The only thing I watched on public television was Doctor Who, back in the days when that was the only place to see it
If they had run it more, I might have donated
