You have to clue him in you need a breather. Drop the ball at his feet, and then flip down and refuse to run after it if he throws it again. Or drop the ball and lay on top of it or whatever else just so he gets the idea.
We got a female Jack Russel Terrier. She was about 9 weeks old and thought I would begin to teach her how to fetch. Went out side, through the tennis ball about 40 feet. Like lightning she went to get it. Surprise to me, she picked it up and ran back to me as fast as she could to have me try to get it out of her mouth and do it all over again.
My dog wasn’t into fetch, he liked tug of war better. But one day I was in the house watching him out in the yard. He picked up a ball, climbed onto the bulkhead, and dropped it so it would roll away. Then he ran down, picked up the ball, and did it again!

Go ahead and take the ball back Fred. If he throws it again just lay down. Mr. Dear will get the message.
