I owned a dog who was about 45 pounds. We got one of those appropriate for his size – supposedly. He could go from 0 to 60 in about 2 seconds and broke the line. The second one he broke the catch that prevents it from reeling out. The third one was sized for a 100 pound dog. Came close to breaking my wrist. I have always used a non-retractable leash since for all my dogs.

As a bike rider who shares trails with dog walkers, I would like to see all those Leash Your Dog signs removed. Most leashes are still long enough for a dog to leap under my wheels; and those retractable ones are so thin they are hard to see.

Retractable leashes are a menace! Dangerous for dogs and humans. Any dog trainer will say not to use them unless you are in an area with very limited exposure to other people and dogs. My neighbor’s dog almost got hit by a car because she dropped the handle when her dog took off after so,ething. The dog ran into traffic because he was terrified of the handle banging along behind him.Another neighbor broke her arm when the retractable got wound around her legs and she fell.

I suggest you let your leashed dog smell ANYTHING they want to, FOR AS LONG as they want to. It’s a critical part of their “dog-ness”, a way to keep abreast of their surroundings and their place in it. That goes for “marking” their territory too ;-)

Those retractable leashes are a menace. My neighbor had one and it wrapped so tightly around my knee I was cut deeply. There was blood everywhere. The scar looks as if i had knee surgery.
