When the church is all about caring for the most vulnerable (as opposed to exploiting the most vulnerable and supporting the most powerful), it is at its best.
It’s this time of year, as a choir member, that Christ’s journey and love comes through as we walk through Holy Week: Tenebrae, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and then, at last, Easter!
I was at a “reading” of the stations of the cross last night in the remodeled garage that we call our church. Seven women and me, the thorn among the roses.
This church is in a less-than-affluent part of the city and some of the membership is barely literate. The congregation shared reading the stations. One woman whose reading skills are marginal was brave enough to volunteer to read the text associated with one of the stations. I felt honored that she felt comfortable enough with us to get up in front of us to speak.
She misspoke and read “womb” instead of “tomb.” That put a whole new perspective on the Resurrection for me.

Holy (Maundy) Thursday Jesus gave his disciples the commandment: “To love one another as He had loved them.”
