I’ve found it easiest to develop a kinship with someone by working together.

My family always used the term “shirt-tail relative”.

I’m pretty sure that’s how some of my relatives got in the family tree. It now appears that my tree has no leaves on it and is just full of nuts!

Satchell’s family tree has lots of bark.

Friends are the family you get to choose.

It’s known as “related by proximity”. Entire villages are based on the principle. :)
