That’s how my oldest learned to read, by sitting in my lap while I read to them, running my finger along the words as I went. One day (before his 4th birthday) he stopped my finger and started reading and turning the pages. Haven’t read to him since, I really miss that, although he is over 40 now.
Our sons learned how to read before going to school, but they still insisted I read them certain stories. I did a better job with the voices than Peter Jackson with The Hobbit.
On a visit by my niece a long time ago, I spent some time teaching her how to read. For the most part it worked ok (e.g. C-A-T to read cat). But as she progressed it soon became clear how stupid English spelling is where none of the rules worked. I just had to say “you just have to know that one”.To take it to the extreme – ‘ghoti’ can be pronounced as ‘fish’ as a result of some vagaries in pronouncing words. See if you can figure out how.

One day, the father of a dear friend told me that he had never read a book after he got out of high school. I was speechless. Saddened too.

“No, but anything else.”
All self-help books appear to be based on the assumption of one-size-fits-all. Whatever worked for the author must surely work for everyone.

<<< I started “reading” at an early age. Still enjoy a good book.
