I thought it was a reference to how the deserts have been expanding since it was partially filmed in a desert of Tunisia. Although, I have to admit, it did – for a moment – look like they were standing on a woman’s nude back; but my excuse is that I looked at this early in the morning.
You can only “visit” a very, very, very small part of any planet. This is more of a “I remember the spaceship was parked next to a sand dune” kind of thing. :)
Did R2D2 & C3PO ever visit Earth in any of the Star Wars movies? The first one, which became #4, said something like “Once upon a time, long long ago”, right?
Anyway, if they have now been projected into the future, then this is climate change comment, but doesn’t has much to do with the daily office life of the strip.
As I mentioned in an earlier comment, the gag here is not about climate change. It’s just a statement on the idea that we could land in one spot on a planet, and think we know what the entire planet is like.

It’s actually not a global warming reference. It’s a different gag. I wonder who can put climate change aside and see it…
