On one of last year’s Red and Rover summer strips, I mentioned Shaggy Rogers in Scooby Doo and someone replied, “Man. You know way too much about cartoons. I didn’t even know Shaggy had a surname.”
At 8.00 am today, here in the UK, I watched an episode of “Scooby Doo and Guess Who” from 2020 in which Velma and Shaggy were contestants on Jeopardy. Velma was introduced as “Velma Dinkley” and Shaggy as “Norville (Shaggy) Rogers”. There was a TV movie called “Scooby Doo in Frankencreepy” in which Velma Dinkley turned out to be descended from the Von Dinkelstein family. Freddie’s surname is Rogers and Daphne’s surname is Blake.
Red may be playing lifeguard, but there’s a slight smile on his face when he says “There’s just no getting through to this guy.” I doubt he’s really angry with his buddy for that big splash! (The tail action is great!)

Defiant! You keep going Rover. Love it! BTW, that trick could be used to keep the Mintz Twins out of the pool. Ha

No running, no barking, no splashing and, especially, no shaking!

Coming close to the cartoon trope of using Rover’s tail as a boat propeller.
