This was worth the wait. You do such heartfelt tributes on Memorial Day, Ms. T. The salute from Snow and Gimpy, a true veteran, and Snow’s tear has made my inferior screen go blurry!
This is how I see my unkle Hans-Jo. I know he was absolutely in the wrong Army. But, with his upbringing, this devastating horrible government was the only thing he knew. Born 1924 in Stettin, he lost his live at age 21 at a place called Semafornoe. Where ever this might be. For me he was only a tear in his mothers eye, a sad longing in my late fathers tales about his ten year older brother whom he missed his whole life just as his only brother, and Hans-Jo was a “tattered and stained” photograph on the nightstand of my grandmother.
Those young guys never had a chance to learn that everything they were told and taught was so absolutely, outrageously wrong. My heart breaks at the thought that they died and probably never knew how wrong their whole world was.

In Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow

What about those who served and fell in other nations’ armed forces? Were they less patriotic? Obedient? Dedicated? Self-sacrificing? Worthy?

They didn’t give (no matter on what side) – their lives were robbed from them.
