Anything bad about Irving happened after he met Cathy. Cathy made him that way. See the common sense that he gives? It was probably among his last, but it was good. Noble even.

Uttering the word “walk” is fatal. Also “dog”. My wife and I used to grope for synonyms when we had a particularly lively dog. I once asked “Where’s the cur?”, and he immediately appeared with ears perked.

Obviously she’s not paying any attention to you, Generic Guy (I don’t think it’s Irving either). It has nothing to do with you. It has everything to do with Cathy being neurotic and self-centered. Don’t take it personally, just move on.

“Dog” is a reflection of “God”. Both give unconditional love.I agree this is not Irving. I thought Cathy would use the dog as an excuse to get away from hearing the whole life story of this boring guy.
