Don’t know why we should respect fools and spend zillions of dollars trying to save them from themselves. That money would be better spent on the homeless.. or refugees.
This tragedy, as in cost of life and use of resources, will turn a mistake into a learning experience for the development of safer deep sea exploration equipment. Others have lost life to explore further than we have before, and be sure it will happen again.
Titan was a lesson for all in the price of hubris and arrogance. The lives that were lost should not have been. I’m searching for a basis for “sympathy”. I think it’s right in the dictionary, in between “sh!t” and “syphyllus”.
Any death is a tragedy, but, maybe, some more attention to refugee deaths crossing the seas looking for better circumstances might get a bit more consideration?
Carbon fibre is a great material, but it has a short life in situations like this and it will probably be found out that the submersible had reached that point on the previous dive. This is a pretty good video put forth by an engineer in regards to what might have happened.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKLamhyJ6bE
@tauyen – All the oceans, and particularly the N. Atlantic, are active cold-war zones. The original search for the Titanic was merely cover for top-secret operations regarding two lost nuclear subs.
The positions and capabilities of the navy’s deep water assets were unfortunately revealed by the response to this failed tourist trap.
I have sympathies for their families, and especially the 19 year old that had the sense that this was not a good idea, but wanted to please his father. However, from there they end, as it’s hard to feel sorry for extreme wealthy people, that do things that only wealthy people can do, so as to differentiate themselves from those that aren’t wealthy. As, for the CEO, at least he went down with his glorified water bottle.
The rich guy that had the sense to back out at the last minute. The money he lost, was the best money he’s probably ever spent in his entire life.
Hopefully, Scott’s next cartoon will be for migrant disaster, that nearly went overlooked by the world. That is, until comparisons of the response given to both crisis were made.
There are parts in the world where fisherman are becoming numbed and/or considering new careers, because of finding dead humans, including babies in their nets far too often.
Russia needs to end it’s terrorist empire building attack on Ukraine.
The world needs to come together to end the problems causing people to flee their lifelong homes in search of a better and safer life. A good start would be admitting greed is not good, and will leave much of the world dead.

This reminds me of the Challenger and Columbia disasters that happened after those in control ignored warnings about flaws.

First thing to learn is why the Navy now says they ‘knew’ of a problem less than 2 hours into the dive, but sat silent.

500 immigrants or more died off the coast of Greece when their ship capsized.
